Bob Dylan had the right idea in 1964 when he sang, “The times, they are a-changing”. While older generations were set on going out for dinner, millennials are breaking the mold yet again.
You used to have to go to a restaurant if you wanted food and either dine-in our take out. Websites and apps like Seamless have bridged the gap. Instead of having to call in and order or physically go to a restaurant to dine, you can place an order online and have it delivered right to your door, without having to interact with anyone but the delivery man. We may be the laziest generation, but boy are we smart!
What if I told you that instead of ordering from a restaurant, you could have the restaurant come to you? Well not exactly, but sort of. The newest foodie apps that are starting to blow up are Munchery and Kitchensurfing. They aren’t about the atmosphere like a restaurant, but they are about the experience and isn’t that what us millennials are looking for? We tried both of these apps out, and we were pretty stoked with the meals we got.
Munchery is an app where meals are prepared by chefs and delivered straight to your door. You can view the menu for the week and place an order days in advance, the night before, or the day of.
Each item on the menu is prepared by a different chef and has a picture of what you will receive, as well as the price, which is very fair if we may say so.
Some menu items we had to choose from were:
Caprese Sandwich – $7.95 (Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy-free)
Grilled Lemongrass Chicken – $11.95 (Dairy-free, Nut-free, Gluten-free)
Vegetarian Red Coconut Curry – $8.95 (Vegetarian, Dairy-free, Gluten-free)
Miso Marinated Salmon – $12.95 (Dairy-free, Nut-free)
Coffee-Rubbed Kurobata Pork Loin – $14.95 (Gluten-free, Nut-free)
Grilled Hangar Steak – $13.95 (Gluten-free, Nut-free)
Five Spice Braised Pork Belly – $10.95 (Gluten-free, Dairy-free)
Cheesy Shrimp Burrito – $9.95 (Nut-free)
You can also choose when you would like it delivered and choose the time frame:
4-5pm
5-6pm
6-7pm
7-8pm
8-9pm
We went with the Grilled Lemongrass Chicken and the Miso Marinated Salmon and chose a delivery time of 7-8pm. Our food arrived closer to 7pm than 8pm. All we had to do was pop it in the oven for a few minutes to heat it up and we were ready to eat!
The food tasted great and it was a relief that we had healthy options. Usually when you think of delivery, you think of fast and greasy food. I think the fact that it is prepared by chefs is a great catch. You can eat a nice meal and not break the bank. We will definitely be using Munchery again.
Next on our list is Kitchensurfing. Kitchensurfing isn’t like your traditional food delivery service. Instead of ordering food from a restaurant or chef, you order a chef. It is more about the experience and being in the comfort of your own home. The chef prepares the meal for you so you can spend the time with your family.
You choose from a rotating selection of chef-designed menus, available Monday to Friday. You can book your dinner same-day or up to a week in advance. Your chef cooks, serves, and cleans up in 30 minutes. For $25/person (includes gratuity), you get ingredients, cooking, clean-up, and even disposable dishware. You can also use Kitchensurfing for Cocktail parties (15-30 guests) and dinner parties (6-16 guests).
On the day we ordered, our menu options were:
Skirt Steak Pizzaiola with Chilled Charred Corn and Farro Salad
Greek Branzino with Roasted Potatoes and Haricots Verts
Black Bean Burgers with Pomegranate Barbecue Sauce and Adobo Corn Chowder
We chose the skirt steak and our time. The chef showed up, had all of the materials with him, quickly introduced himself, and got to work. I sat on the couch with my friends and watched Entourage reruns while the chef prepared the meal. Within 30 minutes we were eating (the chef wasn’t done cleaning up, but hey, the food was good) and we didn’t have to lift a finger.
It was quite the experience, which is how I would rather spend my money. Why spend $25 to go eat at a restaurant when I can spend $25 to have the restaurant come to me? I didn’t have to leave the comfort of my living room and had a great meal and experience.
Besides the great food, both of these apps provided great experiences: the experience of watching Entourage as a chef cooked for me in my own home, and the experience of having a chef prepared meal delivered straight to my door on time. These apps have got it right – millennials are searching for experiences.
Experiential marketing is like the Munchery or Kitchensurfing for brands. It can deliver amazing experiences to consumers – ones that they can remember were tailored to their tastes, involved them in a fun manner, and got them wanting for more even when they’re just hanging out in their couch at home.
